Not All Brow Techniques Are Created Equal
Walk into any beauty conversation today and you'll hear a dozen different brow terms thrown around — microblading, lamination, powder brows, nanoblading, tinting, combo brows. It can feel overwhelming, especially when you're trying to figure out what's actually right for your brows, your skin, and your lifestyle.
At Encanta Cejas, with over 14 years of experience in permanent makeup and brow artistry across our studios in Rochester Hills, Miami, Plantation, and Medellín, we've worked with thousands of clients navigating exactly this decision. So we put together this complete, honest guide — covering every major eyebrow technique from temporary styling to advanced semi-permanent procedures — so you can walk into your next appointment knowing exactly what you want.
Let's break it all down.
The Two Categories of Eyebrow Techniques
Every brow technique falls into one of two categories:
Category 1 — Styling & Maintenance: Temporary techniques that shape, color, or groom existing brow hair. Results last days to weeks.
Category 2 — Semi-Permanent (Cosmetic Tattooing): Advanced procedures where pigment is implanted into the skin to create the appearance of hair strokes or shading. Results last 1–2 years.
Understanding which category you need is the first step to choosing the right technique.
CATEGORY 1: Styling & Maintenance Techniques
These techniques work with your existing brow hair — shaping it, coloring it, and grooming it. They require no needles, no pigment implantation, and no significant downtime.
1. Hair Removal — Waxing, Threading & Tweezing
The most fundamental brow technique is simply removing the hair that doesn't belong. This is the foundation of any good brow shape.
Waxing uses warm wax applied to unwanted hair and removed quickly, taking the hair with it. It's fast, effective, and great for removing larger areas of unwanted hair around the brow.
Threading uses a twisted cotton thread to catch and pull hair at the follicle level. It's known for exceptional precision — ideal for creating clean, defined brow edges — and is gentler on sensitive skin than waxing.
Tweezing is the most precise of the three, targeting individual hairs one at a time. Best for touch-ups and maintaining shape between appointments.
How long does it last? 2–4 weeks, depending on your hair growth cycle.
Best for: Anyone wanting to define and clean up their natural brow shape without adding color or volume.
2. Brow Tinting
Brow tinting applies a semi-permanent dye to your existing brow hairs — and sometimes to the skin underneath — to darken, define, and create the appearance of fuller brows without adding any real hair.
This technique is perfect for people with naturally light, blonde, or gray brow hairs that are difficult to see. After tinting, brows appear dramatically more defined even with zero makeup on.
How long does it last? 4–6 weeks on the hair, 1–2 weeks on the skin.
Best for: Light-haired clients, people who want low-maintenance definition without semi-permanent procedures, and anyone testing a darker brow shade before committing to a longer-lasting technique.
Important note: Tinting works only with existing hair. If your brows are sparse or have gaps, tinting won't fill those in — for that, you'll want a semi-permanent technique.
3. Brow Lamination
Brow lamination has become one of the most popular brow treatments in recent years — and for good reason. It's essentially a "perm for your brows" — a chemical process that relaxes and restructures the brow hairs, allowing them to be brushed upward and set into a uniform, lifted, fluffy shape.
The result is that full, brushed-up "soap brow" look that's all over social media. Hairs that previously grew in different directions are now all pointing the same way — creating the illusion of much thicker, more symmetrical brows.
How long does it last? 6–8 weeks.
Best for: Clients with enough existing brow hair who want a bold, full, editorial look. Also excellent for clients with brow hairs that grow in conflicting directions.
Keep in mind: Like tinting, lamination works with what you already have. It won't create hair where there is none.
CATEGORY 2: Semi-Permanent Techniques (Cosmetic Tattooing)
This is where the transformation gets serious. Semi-permanent brow techniques implant pigment directly into the superficial layers of the skin, creating results that last between 12 months and 2+ years. Unlike traditional tattoos, semi-permanent pigments are formulated to fade gradually and naturally over time, allowing your artist to adjust shape, color, and style as trends evolve.
All semi-permanent techniques require an initial touch-up session at 4–6 weeks and annual color refreshes to maintain results.
4. Microblading
Microblading is the technique that introduced millions of people to the world of semi-permanent brows — and it remains one of the most popular brow procedures in the world.
Using a manual hand tool fitted with ultra-fine blades (0.18mm), the artist makes small, precise incisions in the superficial skin layer and implants pigment with each stroke. The result is a series of crisp, hair-like marks that mimic the look of individual brow hairs — creating natural, defined, fuller-looking brows.
How long does it last? 12–18 months, depending on skin type and aftercare.
Best for:
- Clients with dry to normal skin
- Clients wanting natural-looking, defined hair strokes
- First-time permanent makeup clients
- Clients with sparse or uneven brows
Important considerations: Microblading works best on dry to normal skin. On oily skin, the incisions can cause strokes to blur or fade faster as the skin's natural oils break down the pigment more quickly. For oily skin types, nanoblading or powder brows are often a better fit.
5. Nanoblading (Nano Brows)
Nanoblading is the evolution of microblading — and at Encanta Cejas, it's the technique we consider the gold standard for hyper-realistic brow results.
Instead of a manual blade, nanoblading uses ultra-fine nano needles measuring just 0.15mm — only 0.03mm thinner than microblading blades. That fraction of a millimeter makes a profound difference in the final result.
Nano needles deposit pigment into the skin rather than cutting it, which means:
- Strokes taper more naturally at the ends — just like real hair
- There is significantly less trauma to the skin tissue
- Healing is faster and more comfortable
- Results are softer, more realistic, and longer-lasting
- The technique works beautifully on a wider range of skin types
The strokes produced by nanoblading are so fine, so precise, so hair-like that under a camera lens — even in a close-up — they are virtually indistinguishable from real brow hairs.
How long does it last? 12–24 months.
Best for:
- All skin types, including oily and sensitive
- Mature skin with reduced elasticity
- Clients who want zero-trace results — brows that look completely natural
- Clients who want the most advanced, realistic technique available
At Encanta Cejas, nanoblading is exclusively available at our Rochester Hills, Michigan studio, where our master artist performs this technique with 14 years of precision and expertise.
6. Microshading — Powder Brows & Ombré Brows
While microblading and nanoblading create individual hair strokes, microshading takes a completely different approach. Using a digital PMU machine set to a gentle dotting motion, the artist implants thousands of tiny pigment dots to create a soft, diffused shading effect across the brow.
The result looks like a beautifully applied brow powder or pomade — soft at the front, gradually deeper through the body and tail, creating a perfect ombré gradient. This is why the technique is often called ombré powder brows or simply powder brows.
How long does it last? 18–24 months — generally longer than microblading because the shading technique creates more even pigment distribution.
Best for:
- Oily or combination skin types
- Clients who love a makeup-look brow (defined, filled-in, polished)
- Clients with previous brow tattoos needing coverage or correction
- Clients whose skin doesn't retain hair strokes well
- Mature skin that has difficulty holding fine stroke detail
Powder brows are available at all Encanta Cejas locations — Miami, Plantation, Rochester Hills, and Medellín.
7. Combo Brows
Combo brows are exactly what they sound like — a combination of two techniques in one appointment. The front of the brow is done with microblading or nanoblading hair strokes to create a natural, feathered effect at the head of the brow. The body and tail are then filled in with microshading to add depth, density, and dimension.
The result is the best of both worlds — natural-looking hair strokes where you need them most, with the staying power and fullness that shading provides through the rest of the brow.
How long does it last? 12–20 months.
Best for:
- Clients who want natural strokes and a defined, filled-in look
- Clients with sparse brows who need both texture and volume
- Clients who want depth and dimension that hair strokes alone don't provide

Aftercare: What Every Client Needs to Know
Regardless of which semi-permanent technique you choose, proper aftercare is essential for beautiful, long-lasting results.
The first 7–10 days:
- Keep brows clean and dry
- Avoid makeup on the brow area
- Do not pick, scratch, or rub healing skin
- Avoid sweating, swimming, saunas, and steam rooms
- Stay out of direct sun exposure
- Apply only the aftercare ointment recommended by your artist
What to expect during healing:
Immediately after your appointment, brows will appear darker and more defined than the final result. Over the following week, they will lightly flake or peel as the skin heals. Pigment will lighten by approximately 30–40% during this process — this is completely normal. The true, final result is only visible after your touch-up session at 6–8 weeks.
Long-term maintenance:
Annual color refresh appointments are recommended to maintain the shape and vibrancy of your results. Pigment fades gradually and naturally — the timeline varies by skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, and skincare routine.
Factors that accelerate fading:
- Oily skin
- Frequent sun exposure without SPF
- Active skincare ingredients (retinol, AHAs, BHAs)
- Frequent swimming in chlorinated water
- Certain medications
